Work Music

This might seem like a strange title, but I’ve been doing a considerable amount of home improvement work since my wife and I bought a house, which we are in the process of moving into. All the same, while scraping popcorn off of ceilings, taking down old fans and lights, doing some plumbing and carpentry work, we’ve been listening to a lot of music on my iPod to help with the tedious aspects of the work. One artist in particular that we’ve found is great work music is Bruce Springsteen. My wife suggested that perhaps since his music was written (in the 70s and 80s in particular) with the blue-collar worker in mind, that it would make sense that doing blue collar work while listening to his stuff would be enjoyable. So instead of whistling while we worked, we let The Boss’s album from 1984 “Born In The USA” be our soundtrack. Since it was on the iPod, the selections rolled into his 2005 folk-based album Devils & Dust. Both of these albums are great for more than just background music while working. But if you are involved in any home improvement projects in the near future, I’d recommend Springsteen as a great addition to the work environment. I’m sure those working with you will enjoy it as well.

The Ting Ting’s

I’d heard of this group and have listened to some random tracks from them off and on for a year or so, but I hadn’t delved into a full album until now. I picked up “We Started Nothing” just to see what it was like and I have to say I like it. For now, it’s been great work music at the office. There’s some tracks I’ll certainly feature in a future episode of The Appetizer. My brain isn’t letting me access the part of it that can describe music with clarity and rhetoric other than “this is nice and I like the way it sounds,” so for me to describe what I like about it or what stands out as sweetness is lost for now. But you know, maybe that’s the best way to describe something that’s cool, without having to be overly descriptive. But for the sake of argument I would suggest that if you haven’t checked out this group, surf over to www.myspace.com/thetingtings and listen for yourself. It’s fun indie-pop-rock that’s good for anytime of day. My fave tracks from this album already are “Be The One,” “That’s Not My Name,” and “Traffic Light.” What are you favorite tracks?
