11253830204_87d75f8bc8_z The theme this time has an intriguing title, a play on words and an idea that will stick with you for a while. It’s an episode called A Good Left Hook. What images immediately come to mind? Probably boxing right? Good. That’s a good start.

In boxing a good left hook is the shot you don’t see coming, the one that often isn’t blocked and slips through. It’s the punch that puts an opponent on the canvas that neither the boxer who received it and the one who threw it wasn’t expecting it to land so strongly.

Music has that effect too. I call those Bside tracks. They’re the ones that weren’t the songs that commercial radio, or the band themselves pushed hard. But they connect in a powerful way that leads to a further exploration into the artist’s songbook. Come along with me this hour for a journey into some good left hooks. We’ll dive into the songbooks of 10,000 Maniacs and Fiona Apple as well as emerging songwriters Wendy Colonna, Flannel Graph, Americana act Judah & The Lion, Citizen Cope, Matthew Mayfield and much much more. Prepare to be surprised, and enjoy it.
