Spotlight on Katie Ellen
September 27, 2017 Music

Singer Songwriter Katie Ellen is taking the spotlight and showing us why you need to listen to her debut EP ‘These Little Words’.

From the age of 16, she has been writing music, performing live and teaching. She has now decided to focus her attention on getting her art out to the world. To help give us more of an insight into her world, Katie was kind enough to answer some questions that we had for her. She talks about songwriting, the new EP and more. This is what she had to say:

What was it that inspired you to become a musician and who helped to shape your sound?

My dad was a musician and would let me sing in his country band whenever I was with him.  I was always around music and can’t remember a time when I didn’t know every word to the Patsy Cline classic ‘Crazy’. I started writing for my GCSE music in high school and discovered then that I loved it and haven’t stopped writing since. My sound also comes from the kind of music I like listening to, I went to a produces for this EP who is in a folk band himself and knew what I was looking for.

When you write new songs, do you have a set process or do you go with the flow?

I usually have something floating around in my head before I sit down. I have quite a busy lifestyle so I sometimes find it hard to find a good time to sit and write so when I do I’ve usually got nearly a full song that just needs putting to paper! The most surprising song I’ve ever written was (Your Song) Out Of My Head. I got the first verse down on the guitar and sat for about 2 hours unable to get anything else to come out but as soon as I changed instrument to piano it came out in 20 minutes! It all depends on the song!

Talking of songwriting, which is your favourite song from the new EP and why?

I like all of them, they’re all special to me in very different ways. I really like Half Way There, it was the only song I chose without asking friends and family which one they thought should be on it. I love the chord progression and the circumstance of the song.

If you could time travel to see any musician perform, who would you like to see and why?

The list is endless! Joni Mitchell in her Woodstock days, Prince, Elvis, Johnny Cash (my dad saw him when he was younger and won’t stop bragging!) and I would have love to see Doris Day perform, she’s on of my idols and I have a signed picture of her on my wall. She’s still alive but doesn’t sing anymore.

Finally, what are your future plans and goals for your music?

I’m already planning my next single and would love to do a video. I want to play more live gigs and festivals especially next summer! I would also love to co write with some of the talented musicians I’ve met over the last few months and I’d definitely like to travel out to Nashville again to co write and perform!

‘These Little Words’ EP is a reflection of her country roots. She has learned from the legends of this genre how to write songs with a heartfelt tale. Each track is filled with emotion which feels genuine, this is thanks to her lyrical and vocal talents.

The soundtrack on this release is a nice balance of guitars and piano. They are used to perfection to add the right atmosphere to support each song. For example, ‘Half Way There’ features a beautiful and delicate sound on the piano that is captivating.

From the songs on offer throughout the EP, it is ‘Can’t We Just Be Friends’ and ‘One Reason’ that really shine a spotlight on her songwriting talent. Both showcase how her vocals glide effortlessly but still manage to deliver an emotional tone that grabs your attention. This ability is used to add so much to the stories that she has to share with the listener.

‘These Little Words’ is a wonderful and tender collection of songs that deserves to be appreciated. Head over to Katie Ellen’s Spotify page to listen to her musical talents in full. If your ears like what they hear and you need to grab a copy for yourself then you can do so from iTunes and Amazon.
