  1. Playlist Feb. 4 Weekend

    February 4, 2012 by DGrantSmith

I love having the opportunity to introduce new artists to new audiences, and that’s one thing The Appetizer has been doing every week for the past 8 plus years, with no repeated programming. That means it’s a new show, a new menu, a fresh collection of music each week. This weekend I’m serving up some brand new musical flavors this hour from artists you know and a few you might not. Some of it is yet to be released and you get a sample tasting before most everyone else does. This includes new music from Sinead O’Conner in just a bit. Also a tribute album to the great Bob Dylan that was recently released as a 4 disc set, we have a cut from that. And a few tracks from Golden Fork nominated artists like William Fitzsimmons and Madi Diaz that you can acquire for free. More information at the NoiseTrade page.

We hope you’re connecting with the artists that we introduce to you. Please look them up on their websites, Twitter, and/or FB and let them know you heard them here.

  2. Appetizer Artists + Free Music

    January 24, 2012 by DGrantSmith

Our featured artists are really special to us because we keep in touch with them over the years and get to be a part of their journeys as performers and writers. Over the years we’ve connected with some incredible artists trying to get their music out into the hands and ears of audiences. It’s been an honor to be apart of that process.

One of the artists we’ve connected with and had the privilege of hosting last year in our hometown (check out our in-studio session here) is William Fitzsimmons. For the next week or so, he is offering some of his music to fans for free via NoiseTrade. The link is below.

Also check out Madi Diaz. We’ve featured her over the past several weeks on our radio program and she’s nominated for a Golden Fork Award (you can still vote here).

  3. Artists To Look Out For in 2012

    January 3, 2012 by DGrantSmith

When the new year begins, we always look back at the one that just ended and remember what we liked best about it. That’s what we’ve been doing on the radio program for the past few weeks, and will do a bit more this coming week. But it’s also exciting to look ahead to the road we’re on and see what’s coming up. Though we can’t predict or even see what we’ll experience in the spring, summer, fall and winter months right now, there are a few things we know of that are going to emerge in a few weeks and I’d like to share that with you.

    Upcoming Albums

On January 24th, Appetizer artist Ingrid Michaelson‘s latest release titled Human Again. Ingrid’s style has been founded on a unique blend of folk-rock and ukelele driven songs, notably The Way I Am (found on Girls and Boys) which helped launch her as a thriving indie artist into a more national spotlight. Her follow-up albums Be Ok and Everybody continued in her songwriting and composition style. What the new album offers is a revitalized sound, a fuller and deeper musical experience with a new focus on deeper instrumentation. iTunes Notes says this about the new release, “an unexpected creative jump that elevates her with imaginative instrumentations.” I’ve heard Ghosts from the new release and concur that there is something different about its musical flavor. We’ll preview it on the next episode of The Appetizer hitting airwaves the weekend of January 7th.

Also, another artist featured regular on our program has an album set to be released on January 24th, Madi Diaz. Madi, who had a busy year making Amazon’s Best Songs of 2011 and being nominated for an Appetizer Golden Fork Award (you can still vote here until January 31st), has her website setup for fans to pre-order the new release. Unfortunately, she hasn’t posted any new tracks for us to sample until January 24th arrives. But if her 2011 EP Far From Things That We Know is any indication of what’s to come, it’s no venture too deep that the new music will be fabulous. Her featured track Let’s Go can be yours by signing up on her mailing list at her website.

Other artists releasing new albums in the first month of the year include Nada Surf, Attack Attack!, Fionn Regan, and more.

  4. Tasty Modern Songwriter Flavors

October 15, 2011 by Meagan Freeman

In tomorrow’s episode D Grant will serve up some tasty modern songwriter flavors.

    Here’s the menu:

“Tonight, Not Again” by Jason Mraz

    “Katy” by Peter Bradley Adams

    “Burn” by Ray LaMontagne

“Passing Afternoon” by Iron and Wine

Check out a great video of him performing this song. His great personality shines through when he calls out a guy that has to leave the show.

*The Appetizer loves Iron & Wine (I suppose we should say we love Samuel Beam, since that is his real name)! In 2010, we were lucky enough to get him to pay a visit to Abilene for a concert.

“With Whom You Belong” by Tugout and Fistful of Mercy

“Out of Control” by Mindy Smith

    “Home” by Parlor Hawk

    “Reach” by Andrew Belle

*Andrew is such a talented artist, he actually paid The Appetizer a visit as well. Check out this video from an his exclusive interview and acoustic set at Flyboy Studios with The Appetizer. He performed “The Ladder from his latest album.

“Add It Up” by Andrew Belle

    “Let’s Go” by Madie Diaz

    “Who Will” by Will Straton

    “Foundling” by David Gray

“Safe and Sound” by The Light Parade

*This group was actually formed at ACU, which is the college I am attending. (Go Wildcats…. Yea, I shouldn’t fool you. I’m not one of those full of school spirit type of gals. Sorry if you thought I was.) Made up of Kara DuBose and Alex Howard, it is definitely worth checking out.

“Tied to Me” by William Fitzsimmons

*William Fitzsimmons is a close friend of The Appetizer. We actually have a great podcast with a conversation with William that gives great insight into his life, creativity and inspiration. Taking you all the way back to our 2008 archives, check it out here.

Of course, William has paid a visit to Flyboy Studios for an exclusive interview and acoustic set with The Appetizer. There are many videos from his visit on our YouTube page. Check it out here.

But as always, I’ll share my favorite. William’s acoustic performance of “Beautiful Girl”. I could listen to his voice all day. Couldn’t you?

    “Waltz Me” by Bess Rogers

I know, I know. That is an awesome lineup. Make sure to tune in! You can catch The Appetizer on Saturdays at 9pm on 89.7 KACU (and now a encore presentation on Friday’s at 2pm), Sundays at 9pm on 90.5 KTRL, and Saturdays at 3 pm on 91.3 KVLU.
