  1. Appetizer Artists On The Move

    February 7, 2012 by DGrantSmith

    Bess Rogers' 2011 album cover

One of the best things about hosting a music radio program is getting to connect with artists who are beginning their musical journey, and also some who have been on the journey for a little while. Such was the case a few years ago (2006) when I first spoke with Bess Rogers. Bess is a very talented guitarist and songwriter who tours with Ingrid Michaelson‘s band and has recorded with her on several albums. She also plays with the band Age of Rockets.

Aside from who she performs and records with, Bess has a great solo music career. Back when MYSPACE wasn’t full of scummy sites and I didn’t feel violated viewing people’s pages, Bess had posted some of her music there and was starting to really build an audience for herself. We began talking and I did a short interview with her that was very fun. Over the years we’ve kept in touch and she continues to make well-seasoned, tasty tracks. Her latest album is titled Out of the Ocean, release in October of 2011.

One of the things I enjoy most about Bess’ music is the way she crafts songs about relationships. Whether shining a good or a negative light on where a relationship is going, her ability to take what most of us have experienced with love lost and love gained, as well as love’s possibilities is very unique, and a great listening experience. From her latest album, I’ve become a big fan of Anchor, where she calls to her love and identifies key reasons why she has to have him to make her strong. I certainly feel that towards my love (Check out an old conversation we had in 2010 here).

Me with Rosi outside Lola's in Ft. Worth. And yes, she's sporting an Appetizer hat.

Another artist I’ve been privileged to meet along their musical journey is Rosi Golan. I first met her while she toured with William Fitzsimmons in 2009 at a show in Ft. Worth. She was very gracious and we had a nice conversation you can hear below. Her follow-up to the debut album The Drifter and the Gypsy is the 2011 release Lead Balloon (which features the guitar talents of yet another Appetizer artist Jake Phillips). I recently picked up the new album and checked it out. Like a great movie that you wish could go on, Lead Balloon is a stellar sequel release, picking up with some similar melodies and overall feel that the original had. One nice addition is some more instrumentation to tracks like Everything is Brilliant, a stunning duet overlayed with violin and brush-stick drums.

Both of these artists will continue to be on my radar, and could possibly get a few Golden Fork nominations later in the year as we continue to feature more music from their recent releases. Speaking of the GF award, we’ll be making the announcements soon as to who the 2012 winners are. Stay tuned. And be sure to check out the latest albums from Rosi and Bess. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. I’ll be serving up tracks from them both in the upcoming Recipe of Love edition of our radio program this coming weekend.

  2. Playlist Feb. 4 Weekend

    February 4, 2012 by DGrantSmith

I love having the opportunity to introduce new artists to new audiences, and that’s one thing The Appetizer has been doing every week for the past 8 plus years, with no repeated programming. That means it’s a new show, a new menu, a fresh collection of music each week. This weekend I’m serving up some brand new musical flavors this hour from artists you know and a few you might not. Some of it is yet to be released and you get a sample tasting before most everyone else does. This includes new music from Sinead O’Conner in just a bit. Also a tribute album to the great Bob Dylan that was recently released as a 4 disc set, we have a cut from that. And a few tracks from Golden Fork nominated artists like William Fitzsimmons and Madi Diaz that you can acquire for free. More information at the NoiseTrade page.

We hope you’re connecting with the artists that we introduce to you. Please look them up on their websites, Twitter, and/or FB and let them know you heard them here.

  3. Appetizer Artists + Free Music

    January 24, 2012 by DGrantSmith

Our featured artists are really special to us because we keep in touch with them over the years and get to be a part of their journeys as performers and writers. Over the years we’ve connected with some incredible artists trying to get their music out into the hands and ears of audiences. It’s been an honor to be apart of that process.

One of the artists we’ve connected with and had the privilege of hosting last year in our hometown (check out our in-studio session here) is William Fitzsimmons. For the next week or so, he is offering some of his music to fans for free via NoiseTrade. The link is below.

Also check out Madi Diaz. We’ve featured her over the past several weeks on our radio program and she’s nominated for a Golden Fork Award (you can still vote here).

  5. Tasty Modern Songwriter Flavors

October 15, 2011 by Meagan Freeman

In tomorrow’s episode D Grant will serve up some tasty modern songwriter flavors.

    Here’s the menu:

“Tonight, Not Again” by Jason Mraz

    “Katy” by Peter Bradley Adams

    “Burn” by Ray LaMontagne

“Passing Afternoon” by Iron and Wine

Check out a great video of him performing this song. His great personality shines through when he calls out a guy that has to leave the show.

*The Appetizer loves Iron & Wine (I suppose we should say we love Samuel Beam, since that is his real name)! In 2010, we were lucky enough to get him to pay a visit to Abilene for a concert.

“With Whom You Belong” by Tugout and Fistful of Mercy

“Out of Control” by Mindy Smith

    “Home” by Parlor Hawk

    “Reach” by Andrew Belle

*Andrew is such a talented artist, he actually paid The Appetizer a visit as well. Check out this video from an his exclusive interview and acoustic set at Flyboy Studios with The Appetizer. He performed “The Ladder from his latest album.

“Add It Up” by Andrew Belle

    “Let’s Go” by Madie Diaz

    “Who Will” by Will Straton

    “Foundling” by David Gray

“Safe and Sound” by The Light Parade

*This group was actually formed at ACU, which is the college I am attending. (Go Wildcats…. Yea, I shouldn’t fool you. I’m not one of those full of school spirit type of gals. Sorry if you thought I was.) Made up of Kara DuBose and Alex Howard, it is definitely worth checking out.

“Tied to Me” by William Fitzsimmons

*William Fitzsimmons is a close friend of The Appetizer. We actually have a great podcast with a conversation with William that gives great insight into his life, creativity and inspiration. Taking you all the way back to our 2008 archives, check it out here.

Of course, William has paid a visit to Flyboy Studios for an exclusive interview and acoustic set with The Appetizer. There are many videos from his visit on our YouTube page. Check it out here.

But as always, I’ll share my favorite. William’s acoustic performance of “Beautiful Girl”. I could listen to his voice all day. Couldn’t you?

    “Waltz Me” by Bess Rogers

I know, I know. That is an awesome lineup. Make sure to tune in! You can catch The Appetizer on Saturdays at 9pm on 89.7 KACU (and now a encore presentation on Friday’s at 2pm), Sundays at 9pm on 90.5 KTRL, and Saturdays at 3 pm on 91.3 KVLU.

  6. Matt Morris @ Flyboy (or a taste from the session)

    July 1, 2011 by DGrantSmith

Our series of interviews in the Flyboy Studios has been a real treat this year. In just a few short months, we were able to bring artists into a professional recording studio and have some amazing, thoughtful, and inspirational conversations with emerging and indie songwriters like William Fitzsimmons, Andrew Belle, and George Pendergrass. Well, George isn’t emerging exactly, he has been around a while and performed with Acapella and had a gig with U2 on their Rattle & Hum release. But that’s another story. We’re working now to produce podcasts from these sessions that will be available for you to listen to whenever you want, along with the acoustic songs they performed in the studio.

Our last session was with Matt Morris this past April. Matt came to our fair town to perform in an acoustic concert at the famed and hallowed Paramount Theater. It was a great show, one filled with not only his amazing songs but also his incredible voice, something everyone in attendance was blessed by.

One other thing to point out is that the whole series was not only recorded in Flyboy Studio, but it was engineered and produced by two amazingly talented individuals, Jeremy Strom and Elliott Park. I highly recommend them for studio work, as well as production and music consultation. They’re incredible, as you can hear.

We’ll be airing that in-studio session this weekend on our radio program, heard on KACU, KTRL, and KVLU.

Here’s a teaser of our interview and one of the songs he performed with us. Tune in for the whole shebang!

  7. Our William Fitzsimmons & Jake Phillips Experience @ Flyboy

    June 9, 2011 by DGrantSmith

On March 3, 2011 we hosted two great indie artists in our city. I wanted to share the experience I had with you. First, I need to give a little history and/or context.

Back in 2006 Myspace wasn’t what it is today. I got an account and started hearing some music I’d never known about before. From 2006-2009, Myspace was a mecca for me and others like me who wanted to discover unknown and emerging artists who had a lot of talent but not necessarily the money to really promote themselves. Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of lemons out there too, there still are. Or perhaps I should say there were and are a lot more people with some good ideas and a little talent, but need experience and mentoring before they’ll really be able to market their work in a successful way. During this time, I discovered some excellent indie artists like our good friends Lindsay Katt, Jerzy Jung, Bess Rogers, and William Fitzsimmons. The first thing that stuck out to me was the storytelling and the amazing beard. I admit to being a little jealous of guy’s that can grow the big beard. My facial hair doesn’t have that capability, which is why I grew the goatee so long. But I digress.

Shortly after first hearing William’s music, I messaged him about an interview. He quickly replied and thus began our friendship. Over the years, I’ve been able to keep up with his writing and music through phone interviews and concert interviews. In the interview we’ll present this coming weekend, I reference an interview I did with him in the backseat of a friend’s car, which we also did with indie artist Rosi Golan whom he was touring with at the time. That was a trip, and both were great sports about it.

Me laughing with William and Jake, Elliott Park is setting up the mic

Since 2006, I’ve been working and scheming to get William out to Abilene, namely to perform at our beloved Paramount Theater in a concert series with public radio station (and carrier station) KACU. Finally after 5 years, my colleague and friend Barry Smoot worked it out and scheduled William to perform at the Paramount in a special performance right after the release of his 2011 album Gold In The Shadow. It would be a special concert before his tour began to promote the album, and would feature his good friend Jake Phillips, who was on his tour with Rosi a few years ago. This concert set up an in-studio session with William and Jake that we recorded at Flyboy Studio the day before. The session was recorded and engineered by Elliott Park and Jeremy Strom, whose work and expertise made this a greater experience than I ever imagined.

From the moment we sat down, it was like a private concert taking place in the studio. William and Jake just started playing around on songs. They hadn’t had a practice time up until that point and were going to be performing together in 24 hours. They went through a few songs from the setlist, which was yet to be written completely at that point. They also messed around with a Creedance Cleerwater cover which I think they should record as a single sometime. I’ll have to look and see if we got that on tape or not. It was cool. Towards the end of our talk he asked me if there was a song I wanted to hear and there was, my favorite from his debut album Until When We Are Ghosts called Find It In Me. Unfortunately Jake didn’t know that one, so they couldn’t do it. But they were both great and cool enough to practice it later on (I can only assume) and performed it on stage the following night at the show, which was amazing.

There was a lot of joking and just fun. After we’d been recording and taped a lot of the interview portion, my wonderful wife brought us all coffee that she’d crafted at home (down the road from the studio). I don’t want to brag, but she’s the best at a lot of things. You can read her blog located in our Blogroll category called Tales Of A Clyde Woman to know more of that. But even Jake and William noted that it was the best coffee they’d had in a long time. Afterwards, she also had made some desert for us all. A great touch for a show centered around the commonality of food and music.

The conversation involved everything from that interesting interview from Dallas a few years back to the evolution of his songwriting and journey as a human coming to terms with loss and difficulties in life. Fans of his music know that his first 2 albums told the story of how his family dealt with the divorce of his parents. The third record (Sparrow and the Crow) gave a voice to the two parts of that healing process as he continued to dive into the depth of the hurt, loss, and healing. Being a professional therapist and counselor gives him a unique insight into the process of inner healing. But it can also make it more challenging to deal with yourself when the same symptoms are present. That’s something he had to face in his own life, which led to a different kind of music. His new album Gold In The Shadow deals with a variety of different psychological disorders, and the hope of wholeness that anyone who has experienced loss and pain strive to achieve.

Shameless product placement, you can get your Appetizer mug at our store at http://appetizerradio.com

I don’t want to give away too much of the session except to say that our time together, as it is with other artists, is laid back and casual and will be presented that way. We’re a place where artists come to chill, and in the process talk about their music and stories and hear a song or two in the process. It’s a like a hang out time at dinner that you the listener get to sit in on as well.

The radio program has a running time of 59 minutes, which includes the acoustic songs they performed. There was a lot in the interview I had to leave out because of time. If you’d like to hear the uncut interview, you can email us at info@appetizerradio.com.

This session will air Saturday afternoon at 3P on KVLU-1 in Beaumont, TX, Saturday at 9PM on KACU in Abilene, TX, and Sunday at 9PM on KTRL. Click on the links to go to the station sites to listen live.

All the photography is the work of the amazing Meagan Hernandez.

  8. William Fitzsimmons & The Flyboy Sessions

June 7, 2011 by Meagan Freeman

Talented musicians create a story filled with emotions creativity with each song they write. When I think of this concept, the one artist that comes to mind immediately is indie folk singer and song-writer, William Fitzsimmons. William has a long history with The Appetizer and we were honored to have him visit Abilene to headline a concert for The Paramount Concert Series this year.

Even more awesome, we are able to have an exclusive acoustic session and interview with William Fitzsimmons before the concert. In fact, we are releasing exclusive videos from the session in a series entitled, “The Flyboy Sessions”. The session took place at Flyboy Studio (hence, the name) in Clyde, Texas.

William, as the down-to-earth guy he is drove down to Abilene from Dallas with friend and fellow musician, Jake Phillips. William shared the inspiration between some of his older songs, and some from his latest album, Gold In The Shadow. This was something I found surprising, the majority of musicians are inspired to write a certain song because of a personal experience, and William Fitzsimmons is no exception. But William goes further than that. He backs up his personal experiences by delving deeper into the psychological aspects. In fact, William explained that his latest album was inspired by a variety of psychological disorders. It is also important to note that his isn’t just making this stuff up, he actually has a Master’s in counseling and worked many years as a mental health therapist. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about in one of the videos from the series. In this one, William explains the meaning of his song, “Beautiful Girl”.

Check out the other videos in our series on our YouTube page. We have more on the way, so stay tuned.

  9. Seeing & Hearing vs. Just Hearing

    April 15, 2011 by DGrantSmith

There’s a certain power in the art of seeing. This is the power that has launched the motion picture industry into one of the highest grossing industries in the world, and keep it strong despite economic downturns, recessions, depressions, and other problems. Combining the beauty of sound and sight is a remarkable thing.

This is what makes the live concert so powerful because it takes something you’re already familiar with, or somewhat familiar anyways, and adds a new level of depth to the experience. It’s also what can break a young artist’s career if they can’t put together a dynamic and strong live performance. I’ve seen bands perform in large and small venues that sound amazing on their recording, but just sucked in concert. It soured my view of them. And then I’ve seen other bands that were decent to pretty good on cd who blew everyone and everything off the stage. Their show solidified to me how fantastic they were as performers and entertainers and I have followed their music closer since then.

As I mentioned before, we’ve been really privileged in recent months to host some amazing talent, all who sound great both on their recordings as well as in concert. Last night it was so cool to experience The Bright Light Social Hour at Playfaire Park in Abilene. I’d listened to their music, was familiar with their sound. But the concert experience added so much depth and intrigue to my love of their music that now the appreciation and my like of them is greater.

    Matt Morris

Next week we’ll do the same with Matt Morris. I’m really excited about Matt coming to town because I’ll get to spend some time with him before the show in an interview session at Flyboy. Matt has a fascinating career, the son of a legendary Broadway and country music artist, who has found his own voice and place in the mainstream music. He’ll be performing Saturday April 23rd at the Paramount Theater. Tickets are available at the box office or by phone at 325-676-9620. Listen to Matt below, but DON’T miss this great concert experience because listening is only half the blessing.

  10. TV Is More Than It Used To Be

    May 5, 2010 by DGrantSmith

Really it is.  Used to it was just a means of visual entertainment.  But as you all know, it’s more of a launch pad for creative outlets. HD TV started a whole movement of visual entertainment and raised the stakes for producers for what would sell and what won’t.  I’m not a TV person, admittedly.  I actually did all I could to avoid getting into that market of media when I was in college.  However, I can’t ignore its role in advancing so much of other media, including music.  Public radio is a great doorway open for independent musicians trying to simply be heard.  The next big launch pad is TV.

It’s  not just getting a song in a motion picture that artists and bands can hope will be something to further their marketability.  Commercials are a great place, especially for smaller acts to be heard and get people talking about their music.  Appetizer artists Rosi Golan, The Rocketboys, William Fitzsimmons and others have found success in this way.  Throw in network TV shows and the trinity is complete.

The Amazon Kindle Ad featuring Little & Ashley's "Stole My Heart"

There’s a lot of great examples and songs to talk about, but I’ll limit this entry to one act that I’m now really interested in and it’s all because of their TV commercial.  I’m sure you’ve all seen the Amazon Kindle ad with the stop motion storyline and the “You’ve Stole My Heart, 1-2-3,” song.  That’s done by a group called Little and Ashley, and the music is available exclusively on Amazon.  Great marketing job there.  The commercial is very clever and the song is too.  If you want to see the commercial, check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYUVpjrzvXc.  The link will give you insight into the band.  Check it out.
