Savoring Unknown Flavors of Music- Mandi Mapes

Mandi Mapes
Much thanks this time to my good friend Kyle Bonner for introducing me to an uplifting songwriter named Mandi Mapes.

Not only is her music encouraging, it’s real. By real I mean that it doesn’t gloss over reality or ignore simple truths about life (ie it’s hard, sometimes full of mistakes and inner issues, etc). And on top of that, she has a very creative website which you can view here.

I don’t feature much Christian music on The Appetizer. It’s not that I disagree with the messages, per se. It has more to do with the fact that there are a LOT of artists out there with nothing to say except the same religious lines over and over again. And they’re trying to make money off that same old thing that’s been done again and again. That’s not real. At least not to me. And a LOT of it isn’t creative, which ruins the artistic nature of music for me. Much of this is not honest about life. Most of the religious people I know are chalk full of mistakes and serious issues that they ignore while casting judgment on others in the “secular world.” That’s not honest. And not real.

Mandi is cut from a different cloth. This is what actually drew me to sit and listen to her tracks play on her website. It makes me want to talk with her about her music and it makes me want to share her art with other people. Even if you’re not Christian or go to church or are religious at all, you can appreciate the honesty in her words, the realness in her songs. And you can hear the talent in her music.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-Christian or anti-religious music. But I’ve heard plenty of passionless, non-artistic music in this genre that a LOT of it turns me off. So to discover an artist that could fit in that genre due to the lyrical themes but doing so in a way that shows she’s not just trying to make a million $$ with her faith, means a lot more to me as a music connoisseur and person of faith. What do you think?

Other bands that fit into this category of passion-filled, honest, artistic, and musically vibrant artists of the Christian/religious genre include Blindside, Pedro The Lion, P.O.D., Sufjan Stevens, and several others.

I am proud to say that Mandi’s sister is my very best friend and priveleged to say I have met Mandi, but only recently has she become an inspiration to me through her life and songs. I am humbled.
