Check Out The Civil Wars

Joy and John Paul of The Civil Wars backstage with Jay Leno
I have to admit to being in the dark about this duo (Joy Williams and John Paul White) until only a few months ago. They got a little help getting tons of others out of the dark and into the knowledge of who they are with a big appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as well as being named by Paste Magazine as “The Best Of What’s Next.” They’re now heard on XPN’s World Cafe and KCRW (2 of the biggest indie music and public radio stations in the country). That’s big time for a band who only released their debut album Barton Hollow on February 1st.

They’re currently on tour and will be making their way through Texas next month. They’ll be in Abilene on March 10th at Monk’s and then travel to SXSW in Austin as well as gigs in Dallas and Houston.

Their myspace page has tons of videos and a slew of info on them. I hope to be able to get to chat and interview them next month when they’re in town. I’ll have more on that later. I can tell you that Barton Hollow is a stellar piece of music. On top of having some well-crafted folk-styled original songs, their version of the Jackson 5 classic “I Want You Back” is one of the more original interpretations of any song I’ve heard in a long, long time, and I am a regular connoisseur of cover songs. Check it out for yourself and be on the lookout because I’ll be playing these two in the very near future on The Appetizer.

You can hear a recent interview we did with them on our Conversations At The Table link.
