While in our neck of the woods in West Texas for a performance at Abilene Christian University’s Summit in 2012, we were able to sit down with Mindy Smith and connect with her. At the time, she was in the middle of recording her self-titled album and had already achieved what many songwriters dream of. Her cover version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” not only put her on the map with greater audiences, but was beloved by the original songwriter. They have since become friends and performed the track together many times.
Mindy’s upbringing came from New York, which explains her NY accent. The transition to Nashville and the indie folk scene was a key point in our conversation in studio. Check out the Flyboy Session for that interview and exclusive songs.
The following year we were blessed to get to speak with Mindy again by phone and talk about her self-titled album, which we’ve showcased at length in 2013 on our radio show. Check out the podcast below for that session.
