The Revivalists: Navigate Below (song review)

The Revivalists
The Revivalists

The Revivalists are a fusion rock band hailing from New Orleans. In 2012 the group self released City of Sound which includes the song “Navigate Below.” The song exemplifies The Revivalists’ unique flavor of music with it’s unashamed cross genre influence.

The song opens with the gentle strum of an electric guitar followed by David Shaw’s powerful vocals. The song successfully unifies rock, funk and ska into The Revivalists’ own flavor of music. The song’s Caribbean-esque drumming and guitar strumming give the song a ska feel, but with a slightly slower tempo. The Revivlists aren’t satisfied with just one genre. The ska-influenced guitars and trumpets are frequently dominated by the powerful vocal call “we can work it out”. At times piercing funky guitar solos break through to the forefront. The song is at once ska, funk and indie rock. “Navigate Below” delightfully breaks the monotony of genre boundaries.
