Sound Bites: I Choose You

Joe Con I Choose You There are some sounds that just make me stop and listen. Citizen Cope’s style did that from the beginning with the hip-hop rhythm and vocal style blended with a laid-back rock style.

Indie songwriter Joe Con uses a very similar style to bring really enjoyable, toe-tapping tunes to us. With a look reminiscent of the late Jim Morrison, Joe Con has a tendency to cross Jack Johnson’s vocal sound with a little hip-hop-r&B like Mos Def. Track after track on the his previous album as well as the new release I Choose You lavishes a variety of sound textures from jazz to rock to blues to rap. The look and feel of the music works perfectly given the songwriter’s choice of locale in California, home of the Doors and other now-prominent icons in music.

JC’s I Choose You EP is full of chill rock that flows with that rap vocal style on top of a jazzy music backing. The title track had me in the first 30 seconds and I think you’ll feel the groove too. The album is available on CDBaby for purchase. More insights into Joe Con’s style, story, and sound are at his website.

To give a point of reference to the Jim Morrison claim, here’s one of his older videos from his website.
