It’s time for another talented musician to come into the spotlight and this time it is the turn of Kev Minney. This Brighton based singer-songwriter delivers a sound that has been influenced by folk greats such as Neil Young and Nick Drake. Learning from these masters of the art, Kev has been gaining a reputation for his captivating guitar style and unique acoustic sound.
2016 saw the release of his debut EP ‘All You Need’ and with it, confirmation that he was a songwriter to watch out for. This has recently been followed up with his new album ‘Stories of the Sky’, which will be mentioned later in this feature.
As the spotlight is on Kev Minney, he was kind enough to get involved and share some information about his world of music. This is what he had to say:
Was there a moment or someone that inspired you to become a musician?
I started playing guitar at 12, I remember watching clips of Paul Kossoff from the band ‘Free’ my mother had an VHS video of them playing at thief isle of white festival. I loved the sound they got, said raw and real.
Were there any musicians who help influence your music and the type of sound you have created?
On the long journey to the age of 31 when I started this project, I was in And out of bands, always influenced by different artist from which ever genre I was planning. Tho Joni Mitchell’s ‘Blue’ and all of Nick Drake albums have stuck with me.
You have recently released you debut album ‘Stories of the Sky’. What were your goals when you began working on this project?
My goals are huge. From someone who couldn’t sing and hadn’t written a song my first aim was to get good at that, then write this album, then go on to become a professional touring artist for the rest of my life – I feel I am Close! Another goal is to have something I am extremely proud of, and that I have done.
From the songs that are on offer, which one is your favourite and why?
Favourites always change, and mine at the moment is ‘Chances’ – I still confuse myself at times of the entire meaning of the song, but it feels good. It feels real, I always remember the moment I wrote it. I was in Italy. Myself and my girlfriend returned home from a long walk. I wrote it instantly inspired by my thoughts on the walk.
If there was a movie to be made about you and your music, who would you choose to play you and why?
Yes. Because that would be a lot of fun. Though I would laugh to see an actor trying to play my playful and silly self.
Finally, what are your future plans and goals for your music?
My ambition is always very high, I always want to reach and strive to do more. I’ll be touring, writing and recording for years. I believe it’s a long game, and the journey is what matters. I love every step, challenge and lessons. My current goal is to show the world my debut and I hope they bloody like it.
‘Stories of the Sky’ feels like it was written in the early 70’s with its style, but recorded in the modern day with its multi-layer sound. The way Kev delivers his wonderfully crated stories has this retro feel and with it a charm that is difficult to resist. He has a delicate tone which is supported by Steph Brown and Sophie Cousins, all of which combine to share his lyrics beautifully. A great example of this is the track ‘Can you Feel it Too’.
The star of this album is, without doubt, the guitar technique that Kev possesses. He has a soft and intricate style that is mesmerising on the ears. There are times when you will find yourself getting lost within his finger-picking skills because of the way it is executed. You add to this some piano, electronic elements and additional strings in support and each song has an atmosphere that is captivating.
Overall, Stories of the Skies is a wonderful and soothing journey that feels like a homage to his favourite songwriters. This is an album that will not disappoint, so take a trip to Kev Minney’s Spotify or Soundcloud pages to find out if you agree. If you do and you wish to purchase a copy of the album then physical copies can be found at his store (click HERE) or digital copies from the usual online stores (Amazon or iTunes).
